Iced coffee is a delicious, refreshing treat in the summer heat, but they can be a bit of a rip-off. That’s because you’re paying for a drink that actually contains less coffee than a hot coffee drink because the ice takes up valuable space. Since no one wants to have to order two iced coffees to get their caffeine fix for the day, coffee experts share these tips for getting more bang for your buck with iced coffee beverages.

  • Ask for ice in a separate glass - Simply asking for your ice in a separate cup can help you avoid having your chilled coffee drink be half ice.
  • Bring your own extra-large reusable cup - Not using a disposable cup is better for the environment and if you’re lucky, you’ll score a small discount for using your own cup at the coffee shop. And if yours is on the larger side, you may come out ahead by getting more liquid for the standard price.
  • Order a cold foam topping - Traditional steamed milk is hot and will melt your ice, so if they have a cold foam or cold topping, which is a common addition to cold brew, you can ask for it to be added on top of an iced latte or iced coffee.
  • Ask for an extra shot of espresso - Sure, you’re going to pay more for it, but it could actually save you money in the long run. An extra shot typically costs less than ordering a stand-alone espresso, so if adding it to your iced drink prevents you from needing a second coffee later, it’s saving you overall.
  • Ask for larger cubes - If your coffee shop offers them, larger ice cubes are the way to go. They melt slowly, so it takes longer for the coffee to get diluted.
  • Or just make it at home - If you really want to save, it’s tough to beat the DIY route. Iced coffee is really easy to make and you can customize it just the way you like it.
