As if finding a match on a dating app isn’t nerve-wracking enough, when you’re lucky enough to get one, then the real challenge starts - coming up with the perfect message to send them. We want our opening lines to get their attention, but in a way that makes us look clever and funny, and that’s not easy to do.

Fortunately, new research is offering some guidance by revealing the worst first messages to send dating app matches.

  • A new survey from FindingTheOne.com asks singles about the opening lines that give the ick.
  • While there are a lot of ways to get it wrong, it seems the most basic messages are the biggest offenders. More than three-quarters (78%) of dating app users say they hate getting “Hey” or “Hi” and nothing else.
  • Coming in a close second to that one-word message is “You up?” This brief question is one that 72% of singles say they never want to be asked because it implies the sender is only interested in one thing - sex.
  • While some people might be willing to give someone who sends one of these a second chance, 59% say they most likely won’t reply back.
